The aggregate comes from a site in South Wales beside a railway and close to the regional docks. It is also an area with one of the highest rates of deprivation and unemployment in Wales. The E5 Minerals project could potentially provide employment as a sustainable business for more than 150 years.
Moving say 20 tonnes of aggregate by lorry is fairly inefficient. Travel too far and it becomes uneconomic. But if you can load 3,500 tonnes on a train, there are significant economies of scale and you can afford to transport it further. Nearby docks provide access to export markets.
